Kawagoe: A Charming Edo-Period Town Just a Day Trip from Tokyo

One of the Most Shocking Things After Returning to Japan—Too Many Tourists Everywhere!

There are more people here than in New York, where I used to live!
It’s so crowded that moving around is difficult, and everything takes extra time.
Japan’s major tourist destinations have gone beyond over-tourism—they’re in a state of super over-tourism!

Even my friends visiting from the U.S. say,
“I love Japan, but why are there so many people? And why are there so few Japanese people in Japan?”
They find it truly puzzling.

Japanese people tend to avoid major tourist spots, and now, even experienced foreign travelers are starting to explore smaller, more traditional areas to experience Japan’s true charm.

Location and Access

Kawagoe is located in southwestern Saitama Prefecture, about 30 km from central Tokyo. With convenient transportation options, it is an ideal destination for a day trip.

  • By JR Line: From Shinjuku Station, take the JR Saikyo Line to Omiya Station (about 30 minutes), then transfer to the JR Kawagoe Line to Kawagoe Station (about 20 minutes). Total travel time: 50 minutes to 1 hour.
  • By Tobu Tojo Line: Take the express train from Ikebukuro Station, which reaches Kawagoe Station in about 30 minutes.

* The tourist information centers are located on the left side after exiting each ticket gate. They provide English brochures with information on the one-day unlimited city bus pass, bus stops, bus routes, and major tourist attractions.
